I am a big fan of HP products. I have owned four laptops and three HP printers in the last 10 years. Also I have owned Dell Averatec notebook and Toshiba for the same period. 

Pros: 
1) keypad. The keys are a bit 'thinner notebook keyboard to others (such as Toshiba and Sony models) but not too hard to get used. I use it a lot. 
Two) good battery life. I'm not tired yet but it seems that at least three hours. 
3) work well. Can I use the clock on your lap and trying not to question the previous HP laptop heating and wounds Averatec c. 
4) The total budget laptop the overall design seems quality. 
5) eSATA 
6) distance - never use these but this time it has an HDMI output. 

Cons: 
1) BIOS is locked. This is an unfortunate thing. Not that I can not get into it but only some functions and options is not available. I've never seen a BIOS limited (and myself many books [see above] and desktops. Probably will not matter to most though. 
2) Strange as it may sound the technical support told me that HP will not support SATA SSD. I read some notebooks have problems with this .. I tried it myself but probably will. I hope that HP just does not know what you mean and simply do not see the list of supported hardware. 
3) If the laptop goes into sleep mode receives a special horizontal line which forces me to reboot. I tried to update the display output to an external monitor change the resolution etc. - but these methods do not work. This may be just my laptop or a driver issue. 
4) Ease of fingerprints all over it (probably for the coverage of HP). 
5) The powder looks very considerable extent HP 

Comments / neutral: 
1) Do not block the lid until it clicks into place. The lid is closed however. 
2) No USB or other I I / O ports on the back of the laptop. Has only 3 USB ports. 
3) The power cord is on the right side of the laptop back. 
4) The audio ports are on the right front and two headphones. This seems fairly typical for many HP notebooks but I never use. However it is nice to have. 
5) A docking station expansion port on the left side. Has not yet tried (half-dock) but at least you know it is compatible with the dock. 
6) No modem. It does not bother me but for those of you who still use dial-up will want to know. 
7) comes with 802.11n and it works as expected. 

Overall I think this is a good notebook for students or someone like me who does not do much with his laptop but throws and abuse is much more during the trip.

Great Laptop! Greater Value!

I've had this laptop for 3 weeks now and I love it! 

The best part is the processor. It makes everything run so smoothly. The 4GB of RAM only helps that. The screen looks great and can be adjusted to your preference. The keyboard is nice and "clicky." The number pad is extremely useful. I have used to this laptop heavily with multi-tasking and other stuff and it keeps up with no problem whatsoever. 

It's starts up in about a minute. That includes the time it takes me to type in my password. The battery is giving me about 2 hours which might not be great but it's not horrible. It's dead quiet and even under the most intense usage the fan never seems to need to run high. And it stays cool. Also, it's very lightweight. I don't carry it around too much but every time I pick it up it always surprises me how light it is. I upgraded from an HP dv1000 that had a 14" screen and was thin and light and this is just as light. 

I would recommend this laptop to anyone and everyone. The value is nothing short of a steal.

Great laptop with FEATURES!!!

I've had this HP notebook for about 2.5 weeks now. I bought it to transfer my home videos from vhs and DV tapes to avi files and dvds. So far I have been very impressed. The i3, although at the low end of the intel "i" processors, for my purposes is FAST! I downloaded a trial version of Corel's Videostudio pro x3 (subsequently bought the full version), which I also recommend for the video enthusiasts out there. The hardware and the software complement each other as evidenced in the processing times in the capture, edit and burning stages. One great feature of this HP monster is the Lightscribe-enabled DVD/CD drive. [...] have system and application freewares you can download from their site. There are maybe a couple of hundred templates which you can insert your own images with and burn them directly on the media. NO MORE PAPER LABELS! You will need Lightscribe DVDs/CDs, the reqular ones will not work. I deleted some bloatwares (HP games, etc.) If you are doing videos, I suggest getting an external hard drive (1 to 1.5 TB preferrably) as the files take quite a bit of storage space, avi files in particular. The WIFI feature is awesome... I surf the web regularly piggy-backing on other networks around my area, even skype-video call my daughter. It is bluetooth-enabled as well, but I have not tried that feature. Overall, I am very happy with my purchase... I will try to update this review later, maybe after 6 months of ownership.

I love this laptop its extreamly fast and does it all I cant say enough about it I'm a Toshiba girl at heart my first laptop was a Toshiba and served me very well so I was a little nervous about getting this but the deciding factor for my husband was the HDMI port which would allow us to view media on out HD flat screen the deciding factor from out computer nerd friend was the i3 processor which to me was like Huh? But I trusted him and brought this laptop I gambled and boy did I win I absolutly love this laptop its light and sexy not a eye sore and so functional. Also the battary life isnt bad either it last 4 hours and that even while I'm burning dvds and surfing the web or watching youtube videos. I actually brought mine fro, officemax because they have it cheaper and the shipping was free 2 day as opposed to 2 to 4 weeks on amazon. This laptop is nothing short of amazing and super fast in everyway the only con is the sound and that can be fixed with speakers or headphones it you need to be blown away.The keyboard is perfect not to big not to small meaning its not too tightly pushed together and thats always a plus for me I love my Toshiba but that was one thing I hated the keyboard was aweful. Listen do youself a favor and buy this laptop its an HP and thats obviously a good thing another great thing about HPs is the customer help line when I first got this I wasnt able to go wireless in my home network so I called the Hp number and a wonderful woman was able to remotely fix the problem I didnt have to do a thing which was awesome because I have never seen the mouse moving on my computer and witnessed someone actually taking over my screen from god knows where and just fixing whatever was wrong with it. Again this laptop is amazing and I would suggest it to anyone also if you have a old laptop and want to transfer files I suggest the Belkin Easy Transfer Cables I got one while I was ordering this laptop and it made moving my files flawless and easy it copied everything I wanted even my desktops are identical now and all I did was click a button. I'm a happy camper!!!!

great value and performance

Awesome product and very good value for the price. Nice and lightweight. Screen is terrific for watching movies or playing games. Keyboard and mouse pad take a little getting used to at first but are the best I've ever used. This computer is lightning fast! Windows 7 Home Premium with HP software tools keep everything running with ease of use. I own and heave owned several computers and this is by far the best. Will make the need for a desktop obsolete. Has all features that I could ever possibly want and need in the future. 
My only complaint is that the black finish and chrome mousepad show fingerprints and smudges more that I would like. But the mocha finish is sooo appealing that I would rather live with keep rubbing off the smudges.

Nice quality laptop

I just got this and it booted right up, the screen quality is very nice, much better than the older style of laptops with the satin finish. This high glass finish really makes the screen stand out. I've used laptops by dell, lenovo and gateway in the past so my first impressions are below. 

The laptop is not heavy, very reasonable and despite the 6 cell battery, most times I'm plugged in so it's not a big deal to me. I haven't timed out the battery yet but so far as with any new laptop is seems to do just fine. I wish it came with a cover or bag of some sort until I get my laptop bag, but I guess I'll be careful. 

The side connectors are well laid out, I don't see issues with too much in a spot, it all seems pretty nice. My version did not have a modem (which I hope we don't need much longer). The one thing I'm trying to determine and it may be my misunderstanding but this should have "N" network wireless ability but when I booted it up, my dual band router only showed the regular G. 

The big thing I like is the touch controls of the keyboard layout, everything is touch sensor, no buttons to break. The other thing that I really like is the pc does not get hot like older laptops do. It has no "side vents" for the cpu so it's clearly a much cooler operations than its earlier laptops. I always had to make sure I powered down the laptops in the bag or they'd overheat. With this style I'd be surprised if I had an issue. It comes with a little video remote that is nice if you are watching movies on a flight or don't want to mess with the keyboard. The hdmi on the side probably would be of good use if showing videos that way. 

I personally don't care for the "bubble" design on the black finish, it could have been left alone without that stuff but oh well. As I work with it more I'll be able to post more but it's a very nice laptop and they even have a 50 dollar rebate on some locations. 

As far as gaming, I haven't tried it so far but I'd suspect in most average games this I3 should do fine. I'm sure on call of duty versions it probably will not work well but I have a home desktop pc for that kind of gaming.

Problems with Belkin Wireless NI notebook card.?

I have tried to install this into my laptop but it keeps asking for a WEP number or a hex key. I have put in the number that is on the router, but this doesn't work. I've already got a wireless G network card which works, but the range is limited. The N1 card is supposed to be the best of it's type but just don't work!!
Anybody got any answer for this bearing in mind I don't really know what hex and wep numbers are .

Sounds like a silly question to ask, but if your Window wireless networking isn't set up, it will look for the first available network to connect to.

So if you have wireless router already setup and never had to put in a WEP key before, chances are you might be trying to connect to another wireless network that isn't yours.

If you have forgetton your WEP code, there is usually a reset button on your wireless router that you should be able to push to go back to the factory defaults. Usually WEP isn't enabled unless you go into your router settings.

Your WEP code isn't your phone number, but some manufacturers like Linksys allow you to create a phrase that will convert into a WEP hex code. That is usually easier for people than trying to come up with the hex code. Again, this is accessed through your internal router settings.
