When netbooks were first released there was only really one or two brands. The ASUS model was the first forerunner in the netbook market. It was very small, straightforward, and very economical. This netbook has really been noted as the netbook that started the whole mini netbook fad and actually created a new mini laptop market. However, since then virtually every single manufacturer (Acer, Samsung, HP, Dell, Toshiba, LG, Lenovo, and MSI) have introduced their own netbooks to attempt and get some of the amazing market growth. The only substantial manufacturer who has not yet created a mini netbook, is Apple, but never say never.

Although so many brands entering the market is a beneficial thing as it creates competition guaranteeing that netbooks will keep evolving, as well as keeping pricing affordable, it has also lead to a lot of consumer dilemma as to how to pick out a netbook. This is where researching netbooks comes in.

Fortunately most netbook brands use a similar lingo or jargon when referring to netbook requirements and this makes looking at them a whole lot easier. When assessing netbooks, or anything for that matter, it is important to ensure that you are looking at like for like products and/or features. So the best thing to do when comparing netbooks, is to decide on a set of features that are important to you and assess two, or multiple, netbooks along this set of features. Typical features to assess along include price, screen size, RAM, storage, operating system, and battery life.

You will notice that all the features above that are being compared are completely factual. It is very difficult, if not impossible, to compare along features such as the aesthetics, as this is purely subjective. One person may like a netbook with a sheen, while another will prefer matted.

Netbooks are here to stay, and when looking for how to compare mini netbooks, simply take your time, and research some of the best online trade journals. Look for the major name brands in computer technology, and find the features that will suit your own lifestyle.

Playing Sims 3 on a Netbook?

Hey there.
I'm borrowing my dad's little netbook, and I am absolutely in love with having a little bitty light computer like this. It's so convenient!
I've been meaning to get a new laptop, so now netbooks have my interest - the problem being, I had in mind that whatever my next laptop would be, it would be something I could play some PC-exclusive games with (relatively) moderate requirements on, such as Spore and Sims 3.
I've been trying to research netbooks, but can't seem to find a good, simple resource for comparing processors and such - I don't know all that much about computers, and there's so many models! Are there any netbooks I could play such games on (with an external CD drive plugged in, of course)?

I would not recommend it, the Intel atom CPU is low spec, low cache processor and not designed for the data throughput that games like Sims will put it through. Many net-books have Linux Lite which you will struggle on game compatibility with and the older XP based net-books with the SSD drives are not good either. The newer Windows 7 Starter Edition versions with SSD is much better but still for games play they are just not up to it. There are just not enough hardware resources available to do the games justice and you will be frustrated at the lag and frame skipping whilst in game.
Net-books are designed to be light weight internet connection machines, specially created to make use of the social networking phenomenon and are not really worth the price, you get an under powered giant mobile phone that pretends to be a laptop but hasn't got much in the way of connectivity other than the internet. Most have just one USB port, no CD Drive, a small hard Drive and are already maxed out at 1Gb of RAM and they then come with a light version of the operating system that has many omissions from the full version.
In my humble opinion the biggest hardware con of the century so far, buy a proper laptop!
