My Favorite Windows 7 Tips - So Far
I've been using Windows 7 Ultimate now for about three weeks in my main team, and so far I love it. It's fast, stable and has a lot of new interesting features. The new taskbar is a wonder, that makes it really easy to switch between applications when kept open several at a time like me. I have begun to discover some tips and tricks to help me get the most from Windows 7 and thought I would share some of my favorite with you.
Problem Steps Recorder - With no clear idea how to describe what is happening when your computer acts up to his guru's support frustrating, but Microsoft is willing to help. Windows 7 includes a new excellent solution in Problem Steps Recorder.
When any application starts misbehaving in Windows 7 then all you need do is press PSR Start, type and press Enter, click Start Recording. Working through of what we've been doing and the problem Steps Recorder will record every click and press the button to take screenshots, and all packed into a single compressed file MHTML when finished, ready for emailing to your favorite geeks. It's fast, easy and efficient and will save you and your geek hours of troubleshooting time.
Change to a projector - Windows 7 now provides a standard way to change the screen from one monitor to another, or a projector. Simply press Win + and choose your preferred screen. (This will have no effect if only one display connected.) Especially useful if you use a laptop to give a presentation.
Right-click it - At first glance, Windows 7 looks a lot like Vista, but there is an easy way to begin to detect differences - things just right click. Right click in an empty part of the desktop, for example, and find a menu entry to set the resolution of your screen. No need to go sailing through more display settings. Click the Explorer icon in the taskbar for quick access to common system folders: Documents, Images, folder Windows and more.
Close quickly with Shake - If you have multiple windows open on the desktop and things are getting very messy, it used be a time consuming process to close at all. In Windows 7 can use the Aero Shake feature to minimize all that in seconds, using a gesture cool mouse. Grab the title bar of the window to keep open and give it a shake, and rejoice in a clear desk area.
Jump Lists - Right click on a program icon on your taskbar, and shows not only open up the program and unpin command, but a list of recent files open in the program. Select one and open the program to open the file with a single click. No more files, open, right! IE The following list shows a list of most visited sites so that you can open with a single click as well.
Create bookmark folder - If you are regularly in the same folder in Explorer then select it in the right-hand page, click Favorites on the left menu, and select Add to Favorites. Then, you in the bottom of the favorites list for easy access with one click later.
Libraries - Another method for quickly browsing to specific sites in your file structure are collections. By default, Windows 7 comes with documents, photos, music and video. You can create your own (as clients) by clicking Right-left pane where it says Library and choosing New -> Library. Once there, right click the new library and select Properties, include folder and click OK. You can also add more folders to the library and optimized for certain types of files.
Window management - Can "dock" a window to the left or right half of the screen by simply dragging it to the edge, similarly, you can drag the window to the top of the screen to maximize and double-click the window top / bottom for maximize vertically with the same horizontal width. This is very valuable if often have side 2 documents open to side while working (like me). These actions are also available with keyboard shortcuts:
Win + Win + Left Arrow and Right Arrow wharf
Win + Win + Up Arrow and Down Arrow maximizes and restores / minimizes;
Win + Shift + Up Arrow and Alt + Shift + Down Arrow maximizes and restores the vertical size.
This side by side coupling feature is especially valuable in wide-screen monitors - which makes the old Windows way shift-click on two items in the taskbar and then using the shortcut menu to arrange them feel very painful.
These are some of the tips I've found more useful so far in my Windows 7 adventure. What are some tips I've discovered? Looking for an easier way to do something? Let me know and I will share in a future article.
