Is Laptop Memory worth Upgrading?

Especially in corporate situations, laptops are oftentimes thought of as disposable computers. These devices, simply because of their design, are sometimes more difficult than desktops to upgrade and repair. This may leave individuals thinking that this is because these devices are meant to be disposable, in essence, but this is not the case. Laptop memory can be upgraded, in the vast majority of cases. Though the computers cannot be upgraded in some other ways, memory upgrades are one of the most significant, but cost-efficient, options for any computer. They can greatly extend the service life of any machine.

Laptop memory is not significantly different from desktop memory. The only consistent difference is that it is physically smaller, for obvious reasons. Laptop memory, ironically, when one considers what most people would guess, is oftentimes a bit easier to update than desktop memory. The process is remarkably similar for both types of computer. Laptop computers can usually get RAM upgrades in line with what one would expect for a desktop of the same age. Like desktops, they have ceilings in terms of how much memory they can accommodate. There are also limitations due to the operating system.

Replacing laptop memory is oftentimes very simple. There will usually be an access panel on the machine’s body that will allow immediate access to the RAM. The chips look like smaller versions of what one would see on a desktop. As is the case with a desktop, the memory is held in by plastic or metal tabs, in most cases. One simply depresses the tabs to release the memory, removes the old RAM from the socket and replaces it with the new. This entire process is sometimes quite a bit faster than it is on a desktop.

Laptop memory upgrades, and some other components and procedures, can ensure that a laptop remains useful for an acceptable time after it is purchased. These computers sometimes cost more than desktops and there is no reason not to perform component upgrades from time to time. Memory is one of the easiest of upgrades and these computers are usually designed with that in mind. Knowing that most owners will want to replace their laptop memory with more advanced products, the cases are manufactured to make access quick and easy. Other components, such as the processor and motherboard, are harder to replace than they are for desktops.

How much would a processor upgrade for my laptop cost?

I have an Acer laptop with windows XP on it and it currently has just over 1.5Ghz of ram and the processor is an Intel Single Core 1.73 Ghz.
I want to know how much it would cost to upgrade my processor to at least 2Ghz so i can play Oblivion on it. Thanks

Just make sure you use the same CPU. Example: if it is Intel Pentium 4M, make sure you purchase an Intel Pentium 4M. Also these things are harder than.....well lets just say it is indescribable how hard it is to change these things. They are also very fragile!

EDIT: If you're wanting to speed up your computer, the cheapest, easiest and most efficent way to speed up your computer is to increase your RAM. considering you have 1.5GB of RAM you most likely have a 32bt OS so you can install up to 3GB (or double you RAM) of RAM. Again, like the CPU make sure they are the Same, you have DDR400, DDR2-667. On the bottom of your laptop, usually right behind the battery, is a little removable plate with 2 or three sticks of RAM (or slots for your RAM). make sure you DO NOT shock the RAM with static, it will croke it!
