How Do You Know Your Data Encryption is Really Safe
Data encryption is really safe
----------------------------
There are several types and methods of data encryption. Some of the most popular forms of data encryption include single file encryption, folder encryption, volume encryption, encryption full disk and email encryption for the course.
The Windows XP operating system has the ability to perform file and folder encryption. There are 3 party tools, like PGP Desktop, you can make the entire logical disk drive, file and email encryption.
If you regularly deal with information confidential or sensitive, or if you are concerned about private information falling into the hands of another person, encryption may be the way you want to go. However, there are some things you should be aware of what you donot have a false sense of security.
First, What is data encryption
--------------------------------------------------
Fully ancient peoples and modern history have devised ways to hide, hide and verify that the information is secure or valid. For example, the ancient Babylonians in 4000 BC used something called an intaglio process in which the images and writing were carved or engraved in stone that some traders were identified Babylon, when negotiating. Every trader or merchant had a specific intaglio to make your mark in this way that their customers know what they were buying belonged to or was produced by a particular trade. This is a little different then, more than encryption and digital signatures today, one normally part of the encryption process data.
Encryption is now much more advanced and complex. It is used for everything from securing military secrets to keeping confidential intellectual property. There are several forms of encryption techniques, some are stronger or safer than others. In its basic form of encryption can be thought of as the masking, or coding of the original human readable information. The person who is hiding the information must provide the person sending the information to any key allowing them to decrypt the information so they can make sense of it. For example, I use encrypted email messages so you can correspond with my clients on a regular basis. I do this because in certain types of projects for my clients and discuss private information such as security holes discovered during evaluations security. Such information is obviously not something they want to fall into the hands of another person.
Most data is not encrypted Out starts so be careful
----------------------------
The main reason I'm writing this article is to point out a couple specific issues with data encryption. During a recent discussion a friend told me that he was using folder encryption in Windows XP to get some of your confidential information. He asked me if I thought it was a secure method of storing important documents. My answer was yes and no. Data encryption is used by Windows XP is relatively safe, but the point is that most of data is now encrypted in the folder did not start that way.
Lets take for example a Word document containing financial information staff. You may have written this document to give a central location where account numbers, social security numbers and other identifying information private individual and is easily retrievable. After they finished writing the document, then transferred to the secure encrypted folder. Since it is now in a secure folder, only you can access it because only you know the passphrase that was used to generate the encryption key. For the most part, this assumption is correct.
While you in writing that the document probably hit the save button several times. Or if you're like me, many times. I lost long documents several times in the past and have trained to hit the save button quite often. Each time you press the button to save a draft version of the new file is created. This normally kept in the C name of the profile and settings local settings temp directory. This is done to the recovery and improper purposes. For example, if you make a mistake in drafting the document and the need for their inappropriate actions, one of these temporary files can be used for improper action. Moreover, if your system or application crashed while writing the document that you can recover temporary files stored in this directory. You may have had to go through this before and it works very well.
Now that you've finished your document and copy or move the folder to ensure your document is safe, right? Wrong. It is likely that the files time in the temp directory are still there. Even if you were to remove them is a significant possibility that can be recovered using open-source or very cheap or retrieve data recovery software. If someone where to get your computer hard drive, or remotely access your system somehow there is a possibility significantly from the original version of your document without encryption can be reached. So what can you do to make sure that your encrypted version of your file and data is the only version. There is no clear answer and 100% secure to this question, but I will share with you how to deal.
Change Location Clear temporary files
-------------------------------------------------- --------
The primary way applications like Microsoft Word to determine where to store temporary versions of your files is looking at two user environment variables. A call is called tmp and temp. Click on My PC can access it, choose Properties and select Advanced tab and click Environment Variables. Here you can edit or change the default location for temporary files. One thing I must point out is that although a large number of software packages use these locations for temporary storage, it will be difficult to determine if all they do, or if you save files time elsewhere. You have to do a little research to determine where to store their various applications temporary files. I changed on my system of these variables to point to an encrypted disk where I keep my data and the encrypted files. In this way, I can be reasonably sure that temporary work or versions of files of are also encrypted.
May encrypted files stay encrypted when not copied or moved
-----------------------------------------------
Another thing you should be aware of what happens to encrypted files or folders when copying or moving to another location. If a file or folder that has previously been encrypted is copied or moved to another Windows NTFS partition or volume, the encryption is preserved (in most circumstances). However, if you move or copy the encrypted data to the volume or partition that is not NTFS, the file is automatically decrypted. Furthermore, just because an encrypted file on your hard drive that does not mean that this file will be encrypted when you e-mail someone. E-mail encryption is an altogether different approach. Also, keep in mind that encrypted files are decrypted when transmitted through a connection network.
Making Sure the encrypted files are deleted Really Gone
-------------------------------------------------- --
Because data can be deleted from the disk be recoverable for some time, I use another procedure to limit or reduce the risk of this possibility. As mentioned earlier the data that was deleted can in many cases be easily recovered using commercial software. To be reasonably sure deleted data is not easily recoverable, is writing about the disk where the file and its fragments were found. In fact, it's likely to do this several times to make sure the data is unrecoverable. PGP Software Desktop I use to create encrypted file systems, send encrypted email and create encrypted zip files also has a tool called Wipe free space. This tool will write random patterns of data to all space on a drive that is marked as free. You can tell the software how many times to perform this procedure, but the defect is usually three passes. My primary system performs this task every night. This way I can be reasonably sure the unencrypted version of my encrypted files are not just sitting around waiting to be recovered.
Conclusion
----------
If you are worried about keeping confidential important data, file, folder or disk encryption is a good solution. If configured correctly can be reasonably sure that your private information will remain in private. Just remember that most of the encrypted data does not start, and that the remains of the original information may still exist in an unencrypted state. There are many options with respect to data encryption Windows XP native file and folder encryption, encryption, open source solutions, or commercial encryption solutions, like PGP (Pretty Good Privacy). Do some research in advance to determine what may be the best method for you.

How can I tell if someone is touching my Internet connection?
I have an old BT Voyager 2000 which will not let me create something Encryption WEP because of the age difference between laptop and modem ........ apparently. I see that other teams have been linked as it says the number of computers (there others in the house), but how do I check / WHO they are? Please do not give me a lecture on security unless you can provide a solution to my problem WEP, I live in a quiet street in a small town, but I want to verify, A. Someone in tow is not the reason for my recent slowdown in speed. B. Some non-GIT is trying to exploit the on / my laptop. No, can not afford a modem mew. Thank you!
Your connection speed is unlikely which is due to people "in tow" - try the speed test ADSL (http://www.thinkbroadband.com/speedtest.html) - if you do not like the numbers, look connection strength. In addition, Bruce Schneier is running an open network - here's why: http://www.wired.com/politics/security/commentary/securitymatters/2008/01/securitymatters_0110 Forgiveness - Best I can do without a conference on the packet sniffing ...
