Laptop Docking Station Review

Dell Latitude D630 review

TheLatitude D630 is Dell's latest update to the D620, a light-weight business class machine. The Dell D630 comes with anticipated Santa Rosa platform but is visually the same as its predecessor. The machine starts at $ 899 (as of this writing) and most of the updates are reasonably priced.

Some of you are probably wondering why I chose to little RAM and smaller hard disk. As I said, most upgrades are reasonably priced. I bought 2 GB of Newegg for $ 80, upgrading from Dell would have been $ 200.

Battery

I need my machine to last as long as possible. I chose the nine Dell Cell Latitude D630 Battery despite the fact that the site is pasted from the battery. Honestly, I think I made the right choice, because it lasts a very long time. With Firefox, Office, Wi-Fi, and screen at max (8 / of the battery lasted (I ran until the laptop off) an astounding 5 hours and 15 minutes. Testbed in it, but no Wi-Fi took me 5 hours and 45 minutes.

I did not have enough time to test with the screen at a medium level but Vista tells me I can safely say that you can push a little over six hours with Wi-Fi. If the battery in the media bay to go along with nine of the cell, I would venture about 7.5 or more hours. Of course, this is assuming you are using for lightweight programs and has 1 GB or more of RAM.

In the bottom of the battery is a button that allows level.it check the battery is like the Dell D620 battery goes five levels, giving an estimate of the amount of charge available. I think it's helpful because there is no need to convert your laptop to check the battery level.

Build Design:

This thing feels like a tank and is extremely rugged. The hinges of the machine are stiff but not difficult to open and display not wobble. There is no bending of the screen and you really have to try to press the back to see the waves. When closed, a small, bright the screen hinge is closed. The top and bottom of the machine are magnesium. Still not recommend dropping the machine to see if the material is durable.

The speakers are (I think) inside the laptop, because I saw no openings for them. The battery sticks out the front instead of back. You is also able to add another battery to the DVD bay or replace the drive with something updated down the road. It's easy to replace the drive in case something happens.

I have one complaint: I frequently use my USB slots and I like having the other two ports on the back. I prefer that side. The USB ports are also a bit rigid. Sometimes you have to try to jam the connector into the slot.

Screen

Many people complained about the terrible brightness level the D620. Unfortunately, I have a D620 to compare. I, however, has a ViewSonic VX2025wm desktop monitor that has been color calibrated with a Spyder2 suite. This seems like an apples to orange type of comparison, but if I have to compare, I use something that's been in my possession at least one full year. The added benefit is that this comparison shows how the colors differ from a screen that has near-perfect color reproduction.

I am pleased to 14.1 inches, 1440x900 screen is surprisingly brighter than I expected. I could easily see inside with the sun behind me. This was tested with the highest level of screen brightness (8 / 8).

Speakers

The speaker output at about two watts and are under the palm of the left hand (I could feel it vibrate). There is the quick mute and volume buttons on the top of the keyboard, very useful to have. The speakers are strong ... more stronger than expected. Depending on what is at stake might be able to fill a small room. Unfortunately, the quality, a speakerphone is not always equal output. A, and sometimes middle levels distortions start occurring. Of course, this is a business machine that was designed primarily for production and only similar warnings. It's like Dell bought out all the extra Game Boy speakers and super sized them.

If you like listening to music, carry your own speakers external and possibly your own sound card.

And processor performance

CPU: My machine was outfitted with the new Santa Rosa platform. Processor upgrades include a faster front-side bus and a new level of energy state. According to a representative from Intel (I worked in retail), I was told these new chips are about 10-15 percent faster and equally consume less battery life than the Centrino previous generation. This however, make use of minor applications (office programs) run faster. The design behind this is more likely to use the battery and the people who need a faster processor (multimedia users).

HD: The hard drive is an 80GB SATA drive running at 5400rpm. My plan was to buy a 160GB disk and a portable Newegg, replace the 80GB drive, and convert the original unit of the machine to a portable hard drive. Due for financial reasons, not go through it. The faster transfer speed (higher density) and larger storage capacity are good ideas, but we can not have it all.

GPX: I'll be blunt, this machine was not built for games. Updates this generation Intel integrated graphics, but still no match for dedicated card. Essentially, the X3100 can run old games but do not expect FEAR or an equally game to be played graphic intensive.

RAM: Yes want to run multiple applications, get 2 GB. Vista recommends (read: needs) 1GB to run the operating system and any other application (s) without problems. Before you upgrade the machine with 2GB, came with 512 MB. It was crawling and nearly always accessing the hard drive (and battery consumption in the process). After Upgrade to 2GB, ran as smooth as a hot knife through butter. I needed 2GB because Photoshop is a huge memory hog. If you plan on using this machine for office use, 1GB will most likely be enough to accommodate your needs.

Wireless

My machine came pre-equipped with the Intel 3945 Wireless card offering a / b / g wireless reception. I did not opt for the 802.11n because it is still in draft mode G reception and be there for a while. It is likely that, come to my next laptop (years from now), a new standard be accepted for mobile and receiving N is obsolete.

I was able to test the connection to my Linksys WRT54G router, router common. I was able to go anywhere of the house and pick up a signal. No matter where I went, I could not get the laptop to lose connection, I had to get out and walk all the way to the opposite side of My neighbor's yard to kill him. To put this in perspective, which is about 150 feet.

My D630 was configured with Bluetooth. I tried it with my PDA and was able to synchronize with no problem.

Operating System and Software

I asked my computer with Windows Vista Business. The machine came with the software from virtually zero useless. In fact, apart from the amazing package of security software, only comes with Roxio Creator 9 and Cyberlink PowerDVD 7. All that is uninstalled Google Desktop and Google Explorer Bar.

Security and other

The machine came bundled with a security package by Wave Systems. The software comes with a wizard that helps you select which security level you want to deploy. You are granted the option to request a password and / or fingerprints boot. You can even encrypt the hard drive with the same password / fingerprint.

Trying to use the fingerprint reader, I opted to prompt for my fingerprint fingerprint to boot. The interesting thing about this option is that if you have no password or fingerprint, that can not even access the BIOS. In essence, if the laptop is stolen and if the BIOS is configured correctly, the thief will have a hell of a time trying to access your data. Business users take note, if you tend to lose laptops, you should buy this device. I heard a story of many about how company X lost a laptop with employees and / or other sensitive information.

I tried setting the machine to go to sleep only to discover that requested them. Basically, if the laptop ever clearance records or going to bed, was asked by one or both types of security, depending on your choice.

Even though the team is very well protected from outside firewall programs, there is little for Vista. The package with Vista is pretty useless. Be careful checking important in a relationship without protection, common sense, people.

Customer Service Guarantee

I talked with the support of customers Dell several times to feel for the support they would provide. I'm happy to report all customer service representatives I spoke with very well informed. Everyone responded to my questions without hesitation and correctly, all are very nice, if you too are polite. The longer I was on hold was for five minutes.

I have heard horror stories from the consumer line of Dell but the business line is unbelievably good. I know I made the right choice by paying $ 100 in home service. If some of you are more "butterfingered," get the full package of care.

Update

Upgrading the machine was an interesting trip. The machine originally came with a stick of 512 MB and was upgraded to a matched pair of 1GB sticks (2GB total).

The RAM slots in two places, under the keyboard and the laptop. I decided to start with the most difficult, under the keyboard. I warn here was difficult for me to do that, and I've built more computers than I have fingers and toes. I had to remove the hinge, which felt like it could crack at any moment, followed by the keyboard. After many sweaty but careful minutes, I was able to replace the RAM. The slot of the other, by contrast, was easy: one screw and was made of me.
