Keyboard Problem Laptop
Our guide to cleaning your keyboard
Keyboards can become dirty after periods of extended use, especially if users commonly eat or smoke near the computer. If a keyboard becomes dirty enough, its performance can be affected. Common problems include dead or stuck keys and repeated characters during typing. Note that disassembling your keyboard as described below may void the warranty. It doesnot wear out, they foul out. Proper cleaning and lubrication as described here will restore your Laptop keyboard to the snappy and smooth performance it had when new.
In order to clean it, what you will need are:
lint free cloth.
dry cloth or duster.
suitable cleaning fluid (isopropyl alcohol).
cotton buds.
Can of compressed air or vacuum cleaner.
Flat tip screwdriver (optional for thorough clean).
For a quick cleaning, turn the keyboard upside down and use a can of compressed air to blow out any foreign matter. Be sure to do this in a location where falling debris can be cleaned up easily. Turn the keyboard upside down and tap on it a few times. You should see a bit of dirt fall out. Change the angle and tap harder to make most of it get out.
The steps to clean my HP Keyboard is below, you may take it as a reference.
First, shutdown the hp notebook and remove the mains plug, hold my HP 441541-001 keyboard upside down to release any debris from inbetween the keys (pressing the keys is a good way to release it). If you have a can of compressed air then use it to blow any debris from around and under the keys, if not then use the hose of a vacuum cleaner to remove it.
Secondly, clean the keyboard with cotton swabs SLIGHTLY DAMPENED with water. Replace these often and BE SURE they are only slightly damp. If they are too wet the excess water will contaminate the keyboard through capillary action. This will clean all water soluble contaminants like Coca-Cola, coffee, and sugar residue. For the very small places, cut the foam rubber into small pieces and use the tweezers, again SLIGHTLY DAMPENED, for cleaning. You must clean each and every key space, inside and out, this is critical since this is where the key touches and moves.
Repeat this procedure again using rubbing alcohol and cotton swabs but NOT the foam rubber as it disintegrates when used with alcohol.

Can anyone help with my laptop keyboard problems?
My dell laptop is fairly new (less than two years), but for a while it's had some very annoying keyboard problems. Pressing the L key is like pressing the F11 key, so in internet exploerer it goes in/out of full screen everytime I type an L. If I type a captial 'o' it pastes whatever was in my clipboard, and if I press I (I think it's I) it takes the computer in/out of overwrite mode. Extermely annoying in MS Word when I'm working on something. I haven't spilled anything on the keyboard, and all the keys work, just with the annoying 'side effects'. There was about two days when it suddenly started working perfectly, but since the problem has returned. Does anyone know what's wrong or how to fix it? Thanks so much.
You can call dell to get a new keyboard. if it is under warranty, the keyboard will be free (you will have tosend back the old one). If it is not under warranty, then you will have to pay for it but -- not to worry-- they are under $20! (depending on what model laptop you have). It is very very simple to change a dell laptop keyboard. Just below the monitor (where your power button is) is a removable panel. On the far left or far right side, you will see a small slot where you may insert a screwdriver or some flat object and pry up. It will feel like you will break it but just pry it up and it will pop off, revealing the top edge of the keyboard and 2 or 3 very small screws. (obviously with the power off and battery disconnected) unscrew these screws and the keyboard simply lifts off of the laptop. there is a small flat ribbon cable connecting hte keyboard to the computer, you just slip it in the slot, and press down the clamp.
Very simple, and cheap with Dell. Good luck!!
