problem with the BlackBerry?

I have a blackberry 7730. I installed all the necessary software, such as the latest desktop manager and administrator handheld to the BlackBerry. Now, my problem is, i cannot connect my blackberry to my laptop. When I try to automatically detect the port says check USB connection and try again. What can I do to fix this problem. Thanks, Omer
