Disappointed in the quality

I was looking at a Toshiba, but the guy at Best Buy convinced me to buy an Asus - Asus has been making parts for years, now they build the whole computer, etc, etc. About 2 weeks after I got it, the left mouse key got stuck in the down position. This actually worked to my advantage, because the mouse keys are so HARD to press, now if I barely touch the left button, it registers the click. A couple of weeks after that, while typing normally, the "K" key broke off. I was trying to reattach it (why they can't just snap on and off like a desktop keyboard, I don't know), but I then managed to also break off the "I" key. I guess luckily, the manufacturer does have a 1 year accidental damage warranty, but now I have to send my computer off to be fixed. Hopefully it won't take too long. They do have free 24/7 customer support in AMERICA.
As an accountant, I thought I would really like the numbers keypad, but the keys are too small to really be funtional by someone who does 10-key by touch, and the zero has kind of a wierd placement (so I'm always hitting the right arrow key instead of the "0"). And because the keyboard is shifted to the left to make room for the number pad, I consistently hit "End" when I want to hit "Delete". Once again, why can't laptop keyboards by designed and laid out exactly like, or at least more similar to, desktop keyboards?
I'm a little disappointed that there are no "quick" keys to raise and lower the volume, or mute it. I do like the 2-finger scroll feature on the touch pad and also the placement and feel of the touchpad.
Other than the lack of quality in the keyboard, so far I have not had any problems with the computer. |

Overall this is a good "middle of the road" laptop. I just wanted to point out a few things.
1. The memory speed is not 800mhz. The specs say-"# Memory: 4GB DDR2-800". Windows said 666mhz and when I looked inside there was a 2gb stick of 666mhz. I had a stick of 800mhz I bought to upgrade another laptop so I tossed it in and sure enough, still 666mhz in windows.
Which brings me to #2
2. This laptop is not really upgradable that I can see. It made wonder why they make it so easy to get to all the components. Sure you can put a different mini-pci wireless lan in or maybe a better hard drive, but I can find no info on a processor upgrade and the ram is already maxed out at 4gb. 2gb on-board and 1 slot with 2gb more for a total of 4gb of pc2 6400 666mhz memory.
..note...the T6600 processor does run a bus speed of 800mhz, not the memory.
I bought this for doing work on the road and maybe watch a few movies. Not a Gamer for sure. Overall, I am satisfied with this laptop. Now that I am getting used to Windows7 I like it even more! |

| I bought this laptop a few months ago because I needed a computer that could stream video for one of my classes this semester. I also like to play the sims and roller coaster tycoon. This computer has been great. I have had no problems with it at all. It is very fast and everything works great. My old desktop had half the memory. This computer has no trouble running any of my games or streaming my videos for class. I got it for a bit cheaper than this price at best buy. I would definitely recommend this laptop to anyone not interested in using it for heavy gaming. It doesn't have any crazy features. It is just a good computer that works. |
Good computer, great value, garbage speakers

| Im easy to impress. Ive been using a laptop I bought in 2004 and was still relatively happy with it even when I bought this. That said, I still recognize the value of this computer. First, it performs great. This isnt a review of Windows 7 but the OS is a great improvement over Vista. No need to do a clean install of XP (though I tried installing Android just for phone and couldnt get past the splash screen. Maybe Ill update this once Ive tried installing Ubuntu). The screen is nice and bright (though Id have loved a matted screen - just doesnt seem like its offered by any manufacturer anymore), the laptop is reasonably light, the wide screen is great. Most of this I expected. But the things I am pleasantly suprised about - the keyboard is phenomenal. While the number pad, arrow keys, and hone/delete/end/page up and down buttons are tiny and tough to use with big fingers, the letter and number keys feel more like a full keyboard than any other laptop Ive used. And Im used to wide laptops. The keys are also remarkably soft to the touch. Also, boot up is fast and the battery life is 4+ hours. Havent been too conscious of it, but it seems to have an hour or so left when Im expecting it to die. Not too much unnecessary software that Ive seen though I havent done a full inspection. A few things that would be nice - the Office install is only a trial. Also, there is no installed security software. For the price, I dont think I could expect all of that, but those would have been nice. Also, the speakers are junk. My 6 year old laptop had decent speakers but I really expected these to be an improvement. They dont create much sound so skype conversations are best held in quiet rooms. But if you are on your own without much background noise and you just want some backgroudn music, they will do. The speakers on my laptop make an irritating low volume but always audible screeching sound from boot up to close down. Its quiet enough I can forget about it, but it doesnt go away. When I can live without my computer for a few weeks, I may send it in and see how well they take care of it. |
Enjoy!

After two weeks of fairly heavy use, I can say I am entirely pleased with this machine. I have no major complaints about the computer. The only small part is that I am still not used to the keyboard, but it is on par with other laptop keyboards that I have used. This is my first machine that is not a desktop, so this was an expected problem and not something in particular with the machine.
The chip and the memory are more than enough for my usage, and I am pleased with the utility of Windows 7. I am especially pleased with how cool the machine runs. We bought a Gateway for my wife three months ago, and while that one meets her needs it does run hot on her wrists. She's jealous of my machine, and I have a bit of pride for this, even if its unearned.
I would recommend this computer to anyone that is looking for a medium-powered computer with a crisp display and able speakers and fairly long lasting battery. The biggest complaint is the pricing structure. It fit right in my original price range but only after the mail in rebate. I hate this price structure, as in three months I'll get a check, not when I need the discount. |
